How Poor Ergonomics Can Cause Back Pain

Poor posture places stress on muscle tissue, discs, and spinal joints within your back. You can relieve this unwanted stress on your lower back and other parts of your back by practicing correct posture. If not corrected, the structure of your back will begin to weaken. At Care Chiropractic Center, we have been providing residents of Henderson, NC with back pain treatment services for many years.

Poor Posture Results in Back Pain

Here are some examples of how poor posture can cause lower back pain and other pain in your back:

  • If you are consistently hunched over while sitting or standing, this can cause your back, abdominal, and core muscles to become painful and strained. This results in a reduction of blood supply which then will cause weakness and stiffness in your lower back and trunk.
  • When you sit in a position without adequate support, a forward bend is placed on the spine. Within time, this forward bend may result in spinal disc herniation.
  • Lifting without using proper technique can cause disc herniation and result in pain to your lower back that may radiate to your leg.
  • If you read or work on your laptop while laying on your stomach, this can cause your hip and lower back to bend backward tremendously. This changes the dynamics of the lower part of the spinal curve.

It takes less effort to maintain correct posture. Being aware of poor posture is the first step in correcting it.

Practicing Correct Posture

To maintain correct posture, follow these tips:

  • Walk tall to keep your head balanced above your spine.
  • Get up every hour when sitting and be sure to sit with the necessary support if you are in any type of chair.
  • Be sure to lift carefully when picking up heavy objects. Always keep your back straight and bend at the knees.
